HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC WORK?
Your nervous system controls and regulates every cell of your body. When your nervous system doesn’t work right, you don’t work right. And when you don’t work right, you’re in pain and/or sick! It’s as simple as that.
The goal of the doctor of chiropractic is to turn on your inner doctor, your own natural healing ability, by correcting spinal nerve stress (vertebral subluxations). This nerve stress interferes with the proper functioning of the nervous system, the vertebra of the spinal column, and ultimately with your entire body.
What exactly are vertebral subluxations? They usually follow this pattern: (1) one or more vertebrae loose their proper alignment, causing (2) the opening between the vertebrae through which nerves travel to be narrowed, causing (3) the nerves within those spaces to be inflamed, resulting in (4) interference with the nerve message between the brain and the body.
How are vertebral subluxations caused? By stress! The stress can be caused by either macro-stress or micro-stress. Macro-stresses are usually caused by traumas to the body, such as accidents, falls, sports injuries, birth trauma and other such assaults to the body. The causes of micro-stress are repeated movements that gradually change the alignment of the body causing the joints to function improperly and the muscles to be chronically in spasm and in pain. Examples of micro-trauma include: bad posture, foot problems, repeated motions (using a mouse or a hammer for hours a day), using certain muscles and joints in an activity (such as throwing a baseball), or emotional stress causing tension in the body tissues and postural changes.
Doctors of Chiropractic specialize in locating, analyzing and correcting vertebral subluxations and problems in the extremities. They spend years of highly specialized education learning how to do a thorough examination to locate the problem, and then learning how to manipulate the body in such a way so as to correct the problem (a chiropractic adjustment).
When the chiropractor performs a spinal adjustment she or he is releasing or reducing spinal nerve stress. This permits the body to work more naturally and the nerves to function more efficiently. Your own body’s healing ability is awakened and your body is in greater communication with the forces of vitality and energy and life.
